“However, if you are not ready to give things up to fill them with others (In italy it’s the weather, obviously…. friends, family and usual surroundings, and you are just willing but not ready to open yourself to new, certainly different, and challenging experiences, then do not pack. Stay home. You will be happier. Misery, loneliness, cultural challenges, are every day’s bread for the expat. But also new understandings, opportunities, openness to other cultures, transformations of the self. As I used to say to myself after 6 years of residing in NY, I better quit looking behind me (at the past) else I will hit all the things I find in front of me… took me 20 years in the States to get that. Now I’m in Italy, in my 50’s, and I will try again, as my father did….Cheers!! keep on tripping and bundle up!! ps. now I love the snow, go figure that….”

You’ll be more sensitive to others
You become more aware and sensitive to others when you have been faced with difficult situations or cultural clashes. Your awareness indicator heightens.
You are different; you are changed by your surroundings
You will never be the same person that you were before you moved. You’ll spend time trying to figure out if it’s just you getting older or if it’s your surroundings that have impacted you the most. You’ll unfortunately be unable to separate the two but you know the new country is the stage where these changes occurred.
